SALON: “Freeing Athena”: Join designers Jane Androski and Emily Rye in getting to the root of Athena’s status at the Athenaeum, which remains unchallenged to the building’s visual identity. Find out the truth about how her identity has shaped our perception of the well-known building through a visual scavenger hunt, and what “Freeing Athena” means for the Athenaeum’s future. 5 – 7pm, The Providence Athenaeum, 251 Benefit St, PVD.


11th Annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest: Test out your skills in gingerbread architecture, who knows? You could even win the prestigious title of head gingerbread architect… in your age group. Artist Exchange, 50 Rolfe Sq, PVD. 9am – 6pm

City of Providence Christmas Tree Lighting: Of all the trees in all of PVD, this one is the fairest. See which nominated tree made it out on top, and see it lit in all its glory. 5pm, Alex and Ani City Center, 2 Kennedy Plaza, PVD.

Bowen’s Wharf 45th Christmas Tree Lighting: Get into that Christmas spirit starting at 4:30pm with a visit from Frosty the Snowman, then a Christmas Carol sing-along shortly afterward. The tree lighting at 6pm will be followed by Mr. and Mrs. Claus arriving by boat to share in the charm, fun and cheer of the season. 13 Bowen’s Wharf, Newport.

Boat Rides With Santa!: “SANTA! OH MY GOD! I know him!” He’d be a cool guy to take a boat ride with, don’t you think? Lucky for you, he’s inviting you to an evening of hot cocoa, holiday treats, Christmas wishes and Santa photos galore on the Providence River, Riverwalk and at Waterplace Park. Reservations required. Noon – 3pm, Waterplace Park, Downtown PVD.


RISD’s Annual Holiday Celebration: An afternoon of family-friendly activities, including a visit with Santa, caroling with the Voices of Christmas Victorian Carolers, Irish step dancing, arts and crafts, a book signing, a magician and live music! Stop by and take a free tour of the museum after you’re all Christmased out. 1 – 5pm, Museum Galleries, 29 North Main St, PVD.

FESTA DI NATALE, Christmas In The Plaza: Need a little PVD Christmas spirit in your life? Here’s your chance to see a tree lighting, get your face painted and see some live performances all in one place — prestigious Federal Hill. 2 – 5pm, DePasquale Sq, Atwells Ave, PVD.


Shop Local, Eat Local, Live Local: Know what pairs well with sunglasses? Local food! Shop for some snazzy new frames while dining on on non-GMO food and drink from local restaurants. The Dickens Christmas Feast: An evening of food, costume, song and dance! This is your chance to experience a story in the spirit of A Christmas Carol first-hand, and help bring the spirit of christmas to the Griswold home. 7 – 10pm. Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave, Newport.

Local Fall Harvest Cooking Class “Andrades Catch”: Is seafood your style? What about LOCAL seafood? Add some new and exciting recipes to your cookbook from RI cooks. Noon – 3pm, Al Forno, 577 South Water St, PVD.


Holiday Mixology Workshop with the Cocktail Guru, Jonathan Pogash: Need some cocktails worthy of your classy family and friends? Fear no more! 5th Annual Christmas WaterFire and Festival of Trees: Celebrate Christmas the PVD way with artisan vendors, live performances, a tree lighting. and, of course, a full WaterFIre basin lighting! Bring a toy for the toy drive, or new jackets, socks, gloves, hats and canned goods for less fortunate families.  4 – 9pm, Waterplace Park, PVD.

A Christmas Carol, Granite Theatre, One Granite St, Westerly. Told by Charles Dickens himself with the help of his family members, the story we all know comes to life when everyone starts digging through Dickens old costumes and props in the attic trunks. Thru Dec 20.

Annie, Providence Performing Arts Center, 220 Weybosset St, PVD. The World’s best-loved musical is back in a new incarnation of this iconic story. Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin, this play will feature all of your favorite songs! Runs Dec 29 – Jan 3

Assassins, The Players, 400 Benefit St, PVD. If the assassins (successful or not) of the presidents of the United States could sing, what do you think they’d say? Well, good thing Stephen Sondheim decided to write this play, which won five Tonys in 2004, that shows you just that. Find out what some of American history’s most notorious villains have to say. Runs Jan 5 & 7 with possible call backs on Jan 10.

Deathtrap, The Community Players, Jenks Auditorium, Division St, Pawtucket. Will this playwright’s student kill him for his supposed “perfect suspense play”, and take credit for the writing, or will this showdown end in a different way? Runs Jan 8-17

Cinderella’s Christmas, Scottish Rite Auditorium, 2115 Broad St, Cranston. Cinderella’s stepmothers and stepsisters have already left for the Christmas Ball, and Cinderella still has to fix her ruined gown. Will she make it there in time? Maybe, with the help of her fairy godmother! Bring the whole family! Dec 20, 2pm.

Clue: The Wicked Funny Murder Mystery!, Murder On Us, Bravo Brasserie, 123 Empire St, PVD. Remember that board game you loved as a kid? Well, now you can live it with the help of Murder on Us! Who’s the killer? Maybe it was you? In the restaurant? With the… salad for? Runs thru select Fri and Sat starting Jun 2

Great Expectations, Epic Theatre Company, Artists’ Exchange, 50 Rolfe Square, Cranston. This famous Dickens coming-of-age story revolves around Pip, who survives a lifetime of twists, turns and strange characters by the time he’s grown. This “stripped-down, visceral production takes a brand new look at a classic tale. Runs Jan 8 – 23.

Grizzly Mama, The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange St, Pawtucket. Described as a “pitch-black comedy about motherhood, feminism and the shallowness of sound-bite politics, eliciting shocks and laughs in equal measure,” this play follows Deb, a divorced mom who lives with her texting teenager next door to an Alaskan presidential candidate who changes everything. Runs Jan 7 – Feb 7.

It’s a Wonderful Life the Musical, Ocean State Theatre Company, Ocean State Theatre, 1245 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick. Based on the classic 1946 film about a businessman who realizes his importance in life after an angel shows him what life would have been like if he had never existed. This family-friendly adaptation breathes new life into a familiar story. Thru Dec 27

Festival Ballet’s “The Nutcracker”, Providence Performing Arts Center, 220 Weybosset St, PVD. This timeless production of the classic ballet will feature world-class dancers presenting the story of Clara and her prince. With its beautiful sets, and elegant choreography, this performance is perfect for all ages. ppacri.ort. Runs Dec 18 – 20

This WInter’s War, Burbage Theatre Company, 276 Westminster St, PVD. A series of two plays, one by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, and the other by Shakespeare. The first, Happy Birthday, Wanda June is a “simple-minded play about men who enjoy killing and those who don’t,” a satire about post-war America. The second, titled Titus Andronicus, follows the chain of events when a war hero refuses to take the throne after returning home from battle. Happy Birthday, Wanda June Runs Jan 7 – Feb 5, Titus Andronicus Runs Feb 18 – Mar 18.
